Goodluck Jonathan Congratulates Buhari On 76th Birthday

Former President Goodluck Jonathan, on Sunday, congratulated President Muhammadu Buhari on the occasion of his 76th birthday.

The former President in his goodwill message thanked God for blessing President Buhari with the grace of a long life.

Jonathan further noted that President Buhari has contributed so much to the development of Nigeria, having served the nation in different capacities, and always giving his best whenever he is called upon to serve.

He said, “Yours has been a life of great service to our dear nation, having served as a brave soldier, Governor, Minister of Petroleum, Head of State, and now President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.”

Jonathan, who further highlighted Buhari’s patriotism and deep commitment to Nigeria’s development, also prayed to God to grant the President good health and more productive years.

He added, “I join you, your family, well-wishers and fellow Nigerians to give thanks to Almighty God for the gift of a long life.

“I wish you good health and more productive years, as you continue to lend your skills and energy to the task of building a Nigeria of our dreams.”

FG, Striking ASUU Lecturers To Meet Today

The Minister of Labour and Employment, Chris Ngige, will again engage the leadership of the Academic Staff Union of Universities on Monday (today) to round up the negotiation on the suspension of the strike by Asuu.

Asuu had on 5th November embarked on strike which has lasted for six weeks now, claiming that the action was informed by the poor funding of the nation’s universities and staff remuneration.

Reports says the Director of Press at the minister’s office, Samuel Olowookere, who made this known in Abuja on Friday, said negotiation for solutions to the issues tabled by Asuu was an ongoing issue.

The paper quoted Olowookere as saying in a text message, “Labour minister is again meeting with Asuu on Monday by 4pm. You may wish to attend.”

he, however, refused to give the details of the partial agreement said to have been reached by both parties in their last meeting.

Last week, the Federal Government and ASUU reached a partial agreement after the union leadership met the minister last Monday evening.

Ngige said the meeting touched on some areas of misunderstanding in the implementation of the Memorandum of Action signed in 2017.

He said, “Some of these areas, we have substantial compliance and some other areas have not been fully dealt with like the issue of shortfall in salaries of some federal universities’ workers and lecturers.

“ASUU has given a list to the Accountant General’s Office and we have agreed that by Wednesday, that list should be cross-checked by the Presidential Initiative on Continuous Auditing.”

Prepare For Long Strike - ASUU Tells Members

The President of Academic Staff Union of Universities (Asuu), Prof. Biodun Ogunyemi, has called on the striking academic staff of the Nigerian public universities to get ready for a long strike as the Federal Government is yet to show any commitment in rescuing public schools from collapsing.

He urged Asuu members “to be on the watch and prepare for a long drawn out struggle to salvage the University System”.

Ogunyemi stated this in a Strike Bulletin No 5 sent to all members of the union.

Asuu had embarked on nationwide strike over unfulfilled past agreements by government and under-funding of education.

Ogunyemi charged members to remain steadfast “and resolute in the face of intimidation or antics employed by government through Vice chancellors and Governing councils to undermine the ongoing struggle”.

According to ASUU President, “Government is yet to change its “keep them talking” style and stance as all the meetings held so far with the Minister of Education are yet to resolve any of the demands of Asuu”.
