Robbers shoot LASU graduate during attack on PoS operator

A yet-to-be-identified graduate of the Lagos State University is battling for his life after he was shot by suspected armed robbers who trailed a Point of Sale operator to her residence in the Igando area of Lagos State.

PUNCH Metro learnt on Tuesday that the incident occurred on Sunday on Kayode Onafuye Street in the Alhaji Ede area of the community.

Our correspondent gathered from eyewitnesses that the robbers, who arrived on two motorcycles, stormed a bungalow in the area in search of the PoS operator.

The four-man gang, however, failed to locate their target after they were unable to force their way into the building.

An eyewitness who identified himself simply as Bode said the development angered the robbers, who subsequently opened fire indiscriminately, with one of the bullets hitting the graduate.

The resident said, “The robbers came on two motorcycles and were about four in number. They had traced the PoS operator to her house. When they first got there, they went to her shop, which is very close to the building.

“When they discovered that she was not there, they went straight to the house and started calling out the PoS operator while attempting to enter the building. It was at that moment that the occupants shut the entrance door, preventing them from gaining access. Out of frustration, they started shooting indiscriminately.”

Another resident, who owns a shop close to the scene of the incident but preferred anonymity for security reasons, said the graduate was walking along the street when one of the bullets struck him.

The resident added that most people in the neighbourhood were unaware of what was happening until the sound of gunshots rang out.

“He unknowingly walked into the scene before he realised what was happening. That was exactly when the robbers started shooting after being unable to locate their target.

“It was after they fled that people quickly rushed to rescue the young man and took him to a nearby General Hospital. One of those who rescued him said he had just graduated from LASU and was preparing for the National Youth Service Corps programme for fresh Nigerian graduates.”

A police source told PUNCH Metro that officers were immediately deployed to the scene after the incident was reported.

“Our attention was drawn to the incident, and our men were promptly deployed to the scene. We also recovered some spent bullet shells in front of the house.”

When contacted on Tuesday, the Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, CSP Abimbola Adebisi, said she was not aware of the incident but promised to get back to our correspondent. She said, “The report has not gotten to me. I’ll check and revert.” She had yet to do so as of the time of filing this report.

Police officer rapes 12-year-old girl on her way back from school

The Bauchi State Police Command has commenced an investigation into allegations of rape and indecent assault involving a serving police officer and a civilian following a complaint by the father of a 12-year-old girl in Itas/Gadau Local Government Area.

Police sources told Zagazola Makama that the complaint was lodged on July 22 by Mohammed Saleh, 42, of Itas Gana Village.

According to the report, the complainant alleged that on July 2, at about 4:30 p.m., a serving Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) attached to the Itas Divisional Headquarters allegedly lured his 12-year-old daughter with ₦1,000 while she was returning home from Aisam Academy Secondary School.

The officer was alleged to have taken the girl to a drainage dam opposite the Itas/Gadau Local Government Secretariat, where he allegedly raped her.

The complainant further alleged that on July 10, at about 7:00 a.m., another suspect, identified as Babangida Mai Shayi, 50, of Gambo Quarters, Itas Town, allegedly enticed the same girl with ₦200 to his business premises, where he allegedly committed an act of indecent assault.

Police sources said that upon receiving the complaint, detectives visited the relevant locations, while the victim was taken to the General Hospital, Itas, for medical examination.

The civilian suspect has been arrested, while the police officer has been formally queried as part of ongoing disciplinary and criminal investigations.

The command said investigations are continuing to establish the full circumstances surrounding the allegations and ensure that appropriate legal action is taken based on the outcome of the inquiry.

Police Foil Midnight Abduction, Rescue 61-Year-Old Woman After Gun Battle in Ondo

 

Operatives of the Ondo State Police Command have foiled a midnight kidnap operation in Owo, rescuing a 61-year-old woman, Mrs. Modupe Oladele, after a fierce gun battle with suspected kidnappers.

The police also recovered the victim's stolen Toyota Matrix vehicle while several members of the criminal gang were believed to have escaped into the bush with gunshot injuries following the exchange of fire.

According to the Police Public Relations Officer, the incident occurred at about 2:50 a.m. on June 23, 2026, when armed hoodlums invaded Mrs. Oladele's residence in Owo, forcefully abducted her at gunpoint, and fled with her Toyota Matrix, bearing registration number WWW-434-AG.

The Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of B Division, Owo, immediately mobilised operatives after receiving a distress call and launched a coordinated pursuit of the kidnappers.

The police team tracked the suspects to the outskirts of Ojana Phase 3, where they engaged the fleeing gang in a gun duel.

Unable to withstand the superior firepower of the operatives, the kidnappers abandoned the victim and the stolen vehicle before escaping into the surrounding forest. Police said some of the suspects were believed to have sustained gunshot wounds during the encounter.

Items recovered from the scene included two expended cartridges, a sandal suspected to belong to one of the fleeing criminals, and a torchlight abandoned during the escape.

The Command said the case has been transferred to the appropriate investigative unit for further investigation, while efforts have been intensified to arrest the fleeing suspects and dismantle the criminal gang.

Commending the officers for their courage and professionalism, the Commissioner of Police, Felix Ohagwu, praised the swift response that led to the successful rescue of the victim without loss of life.

He reaffirmed the Command's commitment to protecting lives and property across Ondo State, assuring residents that the perpetrators would be tracked down and brought to justice.

The Commissioner also urged members of the public to remain vigilant and continue to provide timely and credible information to security agencies, stressing that community support remains vital in the fight against kidnapping and other violent crimes.

Police arrest four suspected cultists terrorising Ondo community

Operatives of the Special Anti-Cultism Squad of the Ondo Police Command have arrested four suspected cultists in Ode-Irele, the headquarters of the Irele Local Government Area of the state.

The spokesperson of the command, Abayomi Jimoh, who disclosed this in a statement in Akure on Thursday, said the suspects were apprehended on 20th April, 2026, following credible and actionable intelligence obtained from an earlier arrested suspect.

Jimoh said, “Preliminary investigations indicate that the suspects are linked to ongoing cult-related activities within the area. The suspects have since been charged to court in accordance with due process.”

In another operation, two men suspected to be members of the Eiye confraternity were discovered to have been involved in a series of criminal activities in Idanre and its environs.

“Findings from preliminary interrogation reveal that the suspects are members of the notorious Eiye Confraternity, a group often associated with violent criminal activities,” he stated.

Jimoh equally disclosed that some incriminating items recovered from the suspects include a blue beret commonly associated with cult groups, suspected criminal charms, substances suspected to be Indian hemp, and an unregistered red Honda motorcycle.

He noted that the suspects will be charged to court upon the conclusion of ongoing investigations.

“The Command has intensified efforts to apprehend other fleeing members of these criminal groups who are currently at large. Investigations are ongoing to establish the full extent of the suspects’ involvement in cult-related activities and to uncover any wider criminal network connected to them,” Jimoh added.

Commenting on the development, the Ondo Commissioner of Police, Adebowale Lawal, reaffirmed the command’s unwavering commitment to eradicating cultism and other violent crimes across the state.

Lawal emphasised that the police will continue to adopt proactive, intelligence-led strategies in tackling criminality and ensuring the safety of lives and property.

Police nab suspected kidnappers, rescue victim in Ondo

The Police Command in Ondo State says it has nabbed a suspected kidnapper and rescued a victim in Isua-Akoko, Akoko South-East Local Government Area of the state.

DSP Abayomi Jimoh, the Command’s spokesperson, who made this known in a statement on Tuesday in Akure, said the arrest was made on April 10.

According to Jimoh, one Ahmadu reported at the Isua division that two young men had gone to Ipesi Akoko for cattle rearing, but one of them did not return home.

“Acting on the report, the police immediately initiated a coordinated intelligence-driven operation, which led to the successful rescue of the kidnapped victim.

“The victim narrated that he was abducted at night by three suspected kidnappers. During the incident, while trying to resist his captors, he inflicted a head injury on one of the suspects.

“Acting swiftly on credible information obtained from the victim, operatives of the Isua division mobilised and stormed Obasanjo Motor Park, Isua, at about 0609hrs, where a suspicious individual with a visible head injury was apprehended

“During interrogation, the suspect confessed to being part of the kidnapping gang. The victim later, positively identified the suspect, particularly noting the injury inflicted on him,” he said.

The spokesperson explained that the victim had been taken to the hospital for medical attention, while the suspect was transferred to the Anti-Kidnapping Unit for further investigation.

According to him, the suspect will be charged to court upon conclusion of the investigation.

He also said the Commissioner of Police in the state, Adebowale Lawal, appreciated the timely, credible, and actionable information provided by members of the public.

He said collaborative efforts remained vital in combating crime and criminality.

“The CP commends the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Olatunji Rilwan Disu, for his continuous support and strategic guidance, which has significantly enhanced operational effectiveness in the command.

“The command reiterates its unwavering commitment to tackling kidnapping and other violent crimes across Ondo State.

“It also urges residents to remain vigilant and continue to support the police with timely and useful information,” he said.

Police storm hotel, nab six robbery suspects

The Oyo State Police Command has busted a suspected robbery gang that specialises in using tricycles to dispossess unsuspecting members of the public of their valuables in the Ibadan metropolis.

In a Tuesday statement, command spokesman, DSP Olayinka Ayanlade said six members of the syndicate were arrested while hibernating in a hotel in the city.

Ayanlade said operatives of the Command Monitoring Unit, acting on credible intelligence, received information about the gang.

He added that the suspects were reported to be hibernating at a hotel located in the 7UP/Academy area of Ibadan.

“Acting swiftly on the intelligence received, the operatives launched a well-coordinated sting operation and stormed the location, leading to the arrest of six suspects,” the statement reads in part.

The arrested suspects comprised five males and one female.

They are Kelvin Daniel, 21, Idris Ramon, 25, Christopher Solomon, 35, Mohamed Telim, 21, Taored Aderibigbe, 30, and Adekunle Tolani, 27 (female).

Exhibits recovered from the suspects include 18 different mobile phones, one Opay ATM card, and one National Identification Number (NIN) card.

The police also recovered one tricycle with registration number OYO SHK 508 QP identified as the operational vehicle used by the syndicate.

Ayanlade said preliminary investigation revealed that the suspects have confessed to being members of a criminal syndicate responsible for terrorising residents of Ibadan metropolis.

The command commended members of the public for their continued cooperation and timely provision of credible intelligence, which it said greatly contributed to the success of this operation.

The command further said this underscored the critical role of community partnership in policing, encouraging residents to sustain this support by promptly sharing useful information that can aid in crime prevention and detection.

The command said investigation was ongoing and all suspects would be charged to court upon conclusion of investigations.

It reiterated its commitment to ensuring the safety of lives and property across the state and urged residents to continue to support the police with timely and credible information.

Ondo: Police arrest 21 year-old man for raping, killing elderly woman

The Police Command in Ondo State says it arrested a 21-year-old suspect, Alabi Anthony, in connection with raping and killing an elderly woman, one Olaseni Veronica ‘f’ in Iboropa Akoko Area.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) gathered that the incident happened on Friday at Iboropa Akoko in Akoko North East Local Government Area of the state, while the victim’s age was not disclosed.

DSP Abayomi Jimoh, the command’s spokesperson, said this in a statement made available to newsmen on Sunday in Akure.

“Following credible intelligence, detectives promptly launched an investigation which led to the tracking of the deceased’s missing phone and the subsequent arrest of the suspect.

“The suspect has confessed to the crime and admitted to having carnal knowledge of the victim and thereafter strangling her to death.

“The command condemns this heinous and inhumane act and assures the public that justice will be diligently pursued.

“The case has been transferred to the headquarters in Akure for further discreet investigation and prosecution.

“The state Commissioner of Police (CP) urges the public to promptly report suspicious incidents and avoid hasty conclusions in cases of sudden or unnatural deaths, as timely reporting greatly aids effective investigation,” he said. 

Court Sentenced Pastor To Death For Killing Farm In Ondo

An Ondo State High Court has handed a death sentence to a Pastor identified as Kolawole Samson, after he was found guilty of killing a middle aged man Ayo Olaniyi.

The deceased was attacked after he went to hunt for frogs alongside three others at a fish pond owned by Pastor Kolawole at Gberinlegi Village near Okeigbo area of Ile-Oluji/Okegbo Local Government Area of the state in March 2016.

Kolawole inflicted injuries on Olaniyi’s head with a cutlass. Olaniyi died later at a hospital he was admitted in.

The prosecution attorneys argued that Kolawole’s action was contrary to Section 316 and punishable under Section 319 of the Criminal Code, Cap 37, Laws of Ondo State (2006).

Though the Pastor pleaded not guilty, Justice Ademola Bola who ruled on the case stated that all evidence presented before the court showed that he was guilty of killing Olaniyi. He subsequently sentenced Samson Kolawole to death by hanging.

Police Arrest Chief, Herbalist As Part Of Robbery Gang Terrorising Ondo Bank Customers

Two suspected members of a notorious robbery syndicate terrorising bank customers in Akure, Ondo State, have been apprehended. The suspects, Adetoye Kolawole Martins and Lawrence Ojo Adebayo, were arrested following a robbery attack on a businessman in the state capital.

Martins, an herbalist and Adebayo, a local chief in Iju/Itaogbolu in Akure North Local Government Area, allegedly robbed one Adeyinka Adeniyi of N450,000.00 after the victim had made a withdrawal from a Zenith Bank’s branch in Akure.

SaharaReporters gathered that the two men belonged to a notorious syndicate which had been attacking and robbing customers of some financial institutions in Akure.

Undie Adie, the Commissioner of Police in Ondo State paraded the suspects at the headquarters of the command before journalists.  Mr. Adie explained how the two men trailed their victim (Mr. Adeniyi) to a construction site and broke into his car and stole his money.

The police commissioner explained: “One Adeyinka Adeniyi went to the Zenith Bank, at the Alagbaka branch with his vehicle and withdrew the sum of N450,000.00. He kept the money in the safe of his car and drove to his building site at the Adegboola area of Akure, unknown to him that he was being trailed by suspected armed robbers.

“And when he came back, he found out that his car was broken into and the money carted away and Special Anti-Robbery Squad was promptly contacted. Detectives swung into action and arrested Martins Adetoye Kolawole and Lawrence Adebayo Ojo and upon interrogation, they confessed to the committing the crime.”

He further said: “It is sad to say that this same gang was responsible for the death of Mr. Gabriel Abiodun, a bursar and verger with the Anglican Church Diocese in Akure recently.” 

The police chief also disclosed that the operational vehicles – Toyota Camry car with Reg. No JJ 752 EKY and Siena Bus with Reg. LSR 792 BE – which they always used to commit crimes and monitor their victims had been impounded.

Speaking with journalists, Adetoye said: “I was doing my herbalist job when Mr. Lawrence Adebayo introduced a member of the robbery gang to me. And his name is Gbenga but he is now on the run to avoid arrest from the police. Both of us were always behind the attack on customers of banks in the Alagbaka area of the state capital.”

But Adebayo denied participating in any robberies of bank customers in the state. “I am a chief at my town in Iju. How could I have engaged in such a crime as a public figure?” he said. He added: “I only know this Adetoye through the Gbenga who is now on the run because we belonged to the same political organisation.”

Police Parade Notorious Hoodlums For Allegedly Robbing Students In Oyo

The Oyo State Police Command paraded two people on Monday, for allegedly robbing students at a hostel of the Special Federal College of Education, SPED, Akinmoorin, near Oyo town.

The two of them are ex-convicts who were released from the Abolongo Prison in April.

The PUNCH reports that the suspects were alleged to have in company with three others invaded the hostel on May 13, 2019.

The state Commissioner of Police, Shina Olukolu, said, “Five notorious hoodlums, who were armed with guns, cutlasses and some other dangerous weapons, dispossessed some of the students of their money, laptops, cell phones and other valuables.

“Two of the hoodlums, who identified themselves as Sunday Samuel and Idowu Clarkson, were arrested in their hideouts within Oyo town.

“The arrested suspects confessed to the crime and confirmed that they were released from the Abolongo Prison on April 25, 2019.

“Their confessional statements later led to the arrest of two of their criminal receivers, who identified themselves as Oloko Qudus and Simon Chucks.

“Five laptops and seven expensive cell phones belonging to some of the students were recovered from the hoodlums.”

EFCC Arraigns Two Men For Cyber Bullying And Blackmails

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, Ibadan Zonal Office, today secured the conviction of Osikoya Gbolahan and Rabiu Daniel for offences bordering on impersonation and fraudulently sharing pornographic and indecent pictures.

A statement from the agency says they were arraigned before Justice Watilat Ibrahim of a Federal High Court sitting in Abeokuta, Ogun State on December 10, 2018 and both faced a separate one-count charge.

The charge against Osikoya reads: “That you, Osikoya Gbolahon (aka Mary; aka Lisa Burkholder) sometimes in 2018, at Awa-Ijebu within the jurisdiction of this Honourable Court knowingly sent pornographic and indecent pictures with your e-mail through a computer system and network to one Michael Lukianoff and thereby committed an offence contrary to Section 24 (1) (a) and punishable under Section 24 (1) of the Cyber Crimes (Prohibition, Prevention Etc) Act, 2015.”

The charge against Rabiu reads: “That you, Rabiu Daniel (aka Agent Howard Hall) on 23rd June, 2018 at Awa-Ijebu within the jurisdiction of this Honourable Court fraudulently impersonated Agent Howard Hall, working for the Government/Facebook Compensation bonus and poverty Eradication in order to gain undue advantage for yourself, thereby committed an offence contrary to Section 22 (3) (a) and punishable under Section 22 (4) of the Cyber Crimes (Prohibition, Prevention Etc) Act, 2015.”

They however, pleaded “guilty” to the charge, after opting for a plea bargain.

In view of the plea, counsel for the EFCC, Abdulrasheed Suleman, prayed the court to convict them accordingly.

Justice Ibrahim, thereafter, convicted them and sentenced them to four months in prison, starting from the date of their arrest.

Osikoya was also ordered to forfeit his Honda Accord car, two phones and laptop computer to the Federal Government.

In addition to forfeiting his two iPhones and laptop computer, Rabiu was ordered to refund $500 to his victim.

Two People Killed, Journalist Injured As Police, Youths Clash Over Death Of 17 Year Old Boy

Two persons have been feared killed at Awkuzu, in the Oyi Local Government Area of Anambra State after the police and villagers in the area clashed on Wednesday over the death of a 17-year-old boy, Chibuike Akaniru (pictured:

The youths, it was gathered , attacked the Nteje Police Station, accusing the police of killing Akaniru.

Operatives of the Federal Special -Anti Robbery Squad at Awkuzu were mobilised to the scene of the incident. During the clash between the police and the protesters, two youths were reportedly shot dead. A source, narrated how Chibuike Akaniru died.

"A young man who was riding a motorcycle in the night tried to evade arrest and was hit by a policeman. He lost control of the motorcycle and died in the process. During the protest that greeted the incident , another youth was gunned down by the police. Human and vehicular movements were at a standstill for over three hours on the Onitsha-Expressway."

Confirming the incident, the state Police Public Relations Officer , Haruna Mohammed, however denied the involvement of the F- SARS operatives.

"There is a law prohibiting motorcycle riders from operating in the state from 7 pm," Mohammed said.

“A young man (who was riding a motorcycle at night) , sighted some policemen and attempted to escape. In the process , he rammed into an oncoming vehicle and got injured. He died at a hospital. The youths in the area mobilised themselves that night and moved to the Nteje Police Station, accusing the police of killing their kinsman . But the police were quick to quell the protest."

"On Wednesday, they mobilised again and attacked the police station for the same reason; the police also handled the situation," The police spokesperson said some of the youths had been arrested .

According to Anambra State Broadcasting Service, (ABS) Awka, the villagers comprising youths, elderly men and women barricaded Awkuzu end of Enugu/Onitsha express way and destroyed many vehicles on the way. They also attacked passers by with weapons.

The rampaging youths attacked a bus belonging to Anambra Broadcasting Service (ABS) which had conveyed a reporter and cameraman to cover the developing story of the killing, leaving a Five Hundred Thousand Naira (N500,000) damage.

Narrating what happened, Chibuzor Okoye, the ABS reporter sent to cover the story said that the villagers out of anger over what the police did to their son were unconsolable.

“They took the law into their hands destroying vehicles and harassing passers by. We were lucky to escape with our lives. My colleague, Nicholas Johnson, our cameraman is currently in hospital as a result of injuries he sustained from severe blows to the back the villages inflicted on him with hard wood. 

Our driver on sighting them and seeing that they were going to attack him too ran away, this angered them and they vented their anger on the bus damaging the back windshield and side windows. They also dented other parts of the vehicle”.

Reacting to the incident, the MD/CEO of Anambra Broadcasting Service, Nze Uche Nworah said he was not proper that the villagers had taken the law into their hands.

“It’s unfortunate what happened, the killing of Chibuike Akaniru by the police, but beating innocent people up, harassing them and destroying vehicles is hardly the solution to the problem. Why attack innocent journalists doing their lawful job? 

We have never witnessed such viscous attacks on our staff before. This brings to the fore the dangers journalists face in Africa while trying to do their job. Our cameraman Nicholas Johnson is in hospital at the moment for X-ray and other tests. He took a big whack to the back and we hope that his spine has not been injured in any way."

WhatsApp Group Admin, Members In Police Net For Spreading Fake News

The Kano State Police Command has arrested the administrator and members of a WhatsApp group for allegedly circulating fake news.

According to PRNigeria, the group was accused of spreading the picture of a woman who was accused of trafficking children in Kano.

Magaji Musa, Kano police spokesperson, said the suspects were arrested after the woman issued a complaint to the state command.

He said the suspects, during interrogation, said they had never met the victim and “sought forgiveness” for circulating the “fake” information about her.

Musa said the police have provided security cover for the woman identified as Bushirat Madaki “for fear of mob attacks because her image and the false report on her have gone viral”.

His words: “We received a complaint from a married woman and a civil servant, Mrs Bushirat Madaki, that her picture is being shared on WhatsApp group with the intent to malign and incite the public against her.

“Upon receiving the complaint, the commissioner of police, Alhaji Rabiu Yusuf ordered an immediate investigation by a special team who were able to trace and arrest three married suspects a man and two women for circulating the fake and offensive information.

“When confronted over the petition against them, the suspects admitted that the image and material on the woman were shared and forwarded in their group.

“They also admitted that they didn’t know the woman in person and have never had interaction with her before distributing the image and the story. They, therefore, sought forgiveness.

“For now, the police command has granted the suspects bails because the offence is bailable while further investigation is ongoing.

“The police command is also currently providing security cover for the innocent woman for fear of mob attacks because her image and the false report on her have gone viral.

“We call on social media users to be wary of what they receive and share or forward on social media, especially WhatsApp. We should guard against the misuse of social media platforms by sharing and forwarding objectionable or fake messages,” Musa added.

A Nigerian pastor has been killed by unknown gunmen at his home in Port Harcourt, Rivers state.

Prophet ThankGod Abam, popularly known as The Commander and as Onowu 1, was shot dead by suspected assassins who invaded his home between the late hours of last night and the early hours of yesterday.

Prophet Abam, who is the General Overseer of the Intercessory Prayer Ministry, recently welcomed a baby and was to dedicate him on Sunday, August 5,  2018.

Church members and loved ones have taken to Facebook to mourn the spiritual leader.

Man Brutally Assassinated In Ibadan, Corpse Abandoned In His Car.

A man, simply identified as Baba Jide, was found dead in his car on Thursday morning at Alaro community on Sango-Eleyele Road, Ibadan, Oyo State, with a wound in his head suspected to be from a gunshot.

It was gathered that the man was discovered dead in his white Golf 2 car by passersby.

Some residents of the area were said to have told the police, who went to the scene,

led by the Divisional Police Officer of Sango Division, SP Joyce Madaki, after the report of the incident, that they heard a sound at about 12 midnight but thought it was fireworks.

It was learnt that the deceased was using his private car for commercial purposes and used to return between 11:30p.m. and shortly before midnight.

It was further gathered that he lived alone in the neighborhood where he was shot dead, as his wife and children were not living in the city.
