Robbers shoot LASU graduate during attack on PoS operator

A yet-to-be-identified graduate of the Lagos State University is battling for his life after he was shot by suspected armed robbers who trailed a Point of Sale operator to her residence in the Igando area of Lagos State.

PUNCH Metro learnt on Tuesday that the incident occurred on Sunday on Kayode Onafuye Street in the Alhaji Ede area of the community.

Our correspondent gathered from eyewitnesses that the robbers, who arrived on two motorcycles, stormed a bungalow in the area in search of the PoS operator.

The four-man gang, however, failed to locate their target after they were unable to force their way into the building.

An eyewitness who identified himself simply as Bode said the development angered the robbers, who subsequently opened fire indiscriminately, with one of the bullets hitting the graduate.

The resident said, “The robbers came on two motorcycles and were about four in number. They had traced the PoS operator to her house. When they first got there, they went to her shop, which is very close to the building.

“When they discovered that she was not there, they went straight to the house and started calling out the PoS operator while attempting to enter the building. It was at that moment that the occupants shut the entrance door, preventing them from gaining access. Out of frustration, they started shooting indiscriminately.”

Another resident, who owns a shop close to the scene of the incident but preferred anonymity for security reasons, said the graduate was walking along the street when one of the bullets struck him.

The resident added that most people in the neighbourhood were unaware of what was happening until the sound of gunshots rang out.

“He unknowingly walked into the scene before he realised what was happening. That was exactly when the robbers started shooting after being unable to locate their target.

“It was after they fled that people quickly rushed to rescue the young man and took him to a nearby General Hospital. One of those who rescued him said he had just graduated from LASU and was preparing for the National Youth Service Corps programme for fresh Nigerian graduates.”

A police source told PUNCH Metro that officers were immediately deployed to the scene after the incident was reported.

“Our attention was drawn to the incident, and our men were promptly deployed to the scene. We also recovered some spent bullet shells in front of the house.”

When contacted on Tuesday, the Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, CSP Abimbola Adebisi, said she was not aware of the incident but promised to get back to our correspondent. She said, “The report has not gotten to me. I’ll check and revert.” She had yet to do so as of the time of filing this report.

BREAKING: EFCC freezes Osun government account 10 days to election

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has frozen an Osun State Government account domiciled with First Bank, ten days to governorship election, according to documents seen by Vanguard.

The account, reportedly used for the payment of workers’ salaries, was placed on “Post No Debit” status by the anti-graft agency.

The development came hours after Governor Ademola Adeleke alleged that the EFCC was planning to freeze the state’s accounts and those of top government officials.

In a statement issued on Wednesday by the Commissioner for Information and Public Enlightenment, Kolapo Alimi, the governor described the reported move as an attempt to cripple government activities ahead of the August 15 governorship election.

Adeleke maintained that there was no legal basis for freezing the accounts of the state government, arguing that the EFCC lacked the statutory powers to take such action.

A source close to the governor, who requested anonymity because they were not authorised to speak publicly, confirmed to Vanguard that the account had already been frozen.

“I can confirm that the state government account has been frozen by the EFCC. It is no longer an allegation. The governor will address the press shortly to update the public on the situation,” the source said.

As of the time of filing this report, the EFCC had not issued an official statement on the development. The reason for the account restriction was also not immediately known.

The Oyo State Local Government Service Commission (LGSC) has released 1,535 promotion letters to staff members across the 33 local governments in the Pacesetter State in fulfillment of the 2025 promotion exercise. The letters, covering promotions from Grade Level 06 to 17, were released to beneficiaries in the Commission and across the seven departments in all the local governments of the state. According to him, “This administration under the leadership of Governor Seyi Makinde understands that a motivated workforce is the engine room of good governance. The prompt release of these promotion letters is in line with his resolve to ensure that no civil servant is stagnated and that hard work is duly recognized and rewarded.” The Chairman congratulated the newly promoted officers and urged them to see the promotion as both a reward for past diligence and a call to greater responsibility in service delivery across all the local governments and the Commission. He further reiterated the Commission’s commitment to ensuring regular and timely promotion exercises, capacity building, and improved welfare packages for staff in line with the Omituntun 2.0 agenda of the Makinde-led administration. Makinde disclosed the visit in a brief post on Facebook, saying discussions with the former president focused on important national matters and the forthcoming election.

Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde; former Ekiti State Governor, Kayode Fayemi; and a former Osun State governor, Olagunsoye Oyinlola, on Sunday visited former President Olusegun Obasanjo at his residence in Abeokuta, Ogun State.

CityNews reports that the meeting came amid growing political consultations and realignments ahead of the 2027 general election.

Makinde disclosed the visit in a brief post on Facebook, saying discussions with the former president focused on important national matters and the forthcoming election.

“Earlier today, we visited Baba, His Excellency Chief Olusegun Obasanjo GCFR in Abeokuta,” Makinde wrote.

“Our discussions centred on important national issues in view of the upcoming general election. We appreciate Baba for his wise counsel at this crucial time in our nation’s history.”

Although details of the discussions were not disclosed, the presence of the three political figures has heightened speculation about fresh alignments ahead of the presidential election.

Makinde formally declared his intention to contest the presidency in May as he approaches the end of his second term as Oyo State governor.

The governor, who emerged as the presidential candidate of the Allied Peoples Movement, announced his ambition during a joint mega rally involving the Peoples Democratic Party and the APM in Ibadan.

Declaring that “the time to reset Nigeria is now,” Makinde said the country’s condition had continued to deteriorate, leaving many Nigerians struggling to survive.

He also accused public officials responsible for citizens’ welfare of abandoning their responsibilities.

Makinde is expected to contest the 2027 presidential election against several leading political figures.

They include President Bola Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress, who is seeking a second term; former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar of the African Democratic Congress; and Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress.

The Abeokuta meeting has attracted particular attention because Oyinlola remains a chieftain of the PDP, while Fayemi is a member of the APC.

Obasanjo has yet to publicly announce the candidate he will support in the 2027 presidential election.

The former president has, however, been widely linked to Peter Obi’s presidential ambition, although he has made no formal endorsement.

Obasanjo has also been at the centre of renewed political controversy following his allegation that Atiku gave the late former Speaker of the House of Representatives, Ghali Umar Na’Abba, ₦5m to commence impeachment proceedings against him during his first term in office.

Atiku rejected the allegation and accused Obasanjo of attempting to rewrite history and weaken opposition figures ahead of the 2027 election.
